Portillo’s began in 1963 when Dick Portillo, a Marine veteran, and his wife Sharon used their $1,100 savings to open a small hot dog stand called “The Dog House” in Villa Park, Illinois. Operating out of a 12-foot trailer with no running water or restroom, Dick learned the business by studying competitors and refining his operations.
